Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has been petitioned to request from the United States Government all information related to corruption allegations involving persons sanctioned between December 9, 2020 to August 2022, regarding whom prosecutions are yet to commence.
The petition was made by the Joint Civil Society Anti-Corruption Initiative (JOCSAI), which brings together eight civil society and community-based organizations
committed to supporting the fight against corruption and bad governance in Liberia, together with two hundred twenty-eight individual petitioners.
JOCSAI named Cllr. Varney G. Sherman, Senator of Grand Cape Mount County, Prince Y. Johnson, Senator of Nimba County, Nathaniel McGill, former Minister of State
for Presidential Affairs, Mr. Bill Twehway, former Managing Director of the National Port Authority and Cllr. Sayma Cyrenius Cephas, former Solicitor General of the Republic of Liberia as the official of the government who were sanctioned by the United States government to be investigated.
The petition called on the LACC to launch a timely, robust and impartial investigation into corruption allegations as well as prosecute the concerned
officials in line with the Commission’s mandate of investigating and prosecuting all allegations and incidences of corruption in Liberia.
The LACC through the petition was requested to conduct a speedy and thorough investigation in cases of alleged corruption involving the five sanctioned government officials of Liberia noting that it is critical to ending the culture of impunity for corruption in the society, and to maintain the public trust in the justice and accountability systems.
Receiving the petition at the Head Office of the Commission in Congo Town, the Executive Chairperson of the LACC welcomed JOCSAI to the offices of the LACC and told the petitioners that the Commission has already started to discuss issues raised in the petition.
Cllr. Alexandra Zoe thanked JOCSAI for the petition and assured them that LACC will shortly commence work on the issues raised in the petition and the public will duly be informed as progress is made.
