LACC Meets with New Swedish Ambassador Karl Backeus and Team
On November 19, 2024, the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) welcomed the new Swedish Ambassador to Liberia, H.E. Karl Backeus, and his team to the LACC headquarters. The Ambassador's courtesy call aimed to better understand the LACC's mandate and explore potential areas for collaboration in the fight against corruption.
During the meeting, the Executive Chairperson of the LACC, Cllr. Alexandra Kormah Zoe, provided an overview of the Commission's work, highlighting its strengths and the challenges it faces. She emphasized that establishing a specialized anti-corruption court is critical to ensuring the swift and effective trial of corruption cases. She informed the Ambassador that a draft bill to create this court is currently before the Legislature.
Cllr. Zoe further noted that, despite the many challenges inherited by the new Body of Commissioners since their appointment in September 2023, the Commission has been working diligently to fulfill its mandate and make significant strides in combating corruption across Liberia.
Ambassador Backeus expressed his commitment to exploring ways Sweden can support the LACC's efforts and looked forward to future collaboration to enhance transparency and accountability in Liberia.
The LACC appreciates the Swedish Embassy's interest in strengthening its partnership and remains committed to advancing its mission of promoting integrity and good governance.
