The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) on Thursday, July 11 joined other anti-corruption institutions in Africa to commemorate African Anti-Corruption Day

On July 11, 2003, the African Union (AU) adopted the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC) in Maputo, Mozambique. The Convention entered into force in 2006. To date, forty-eight (48) Member States of the African Union have ratified the Convention.

Recognizing whistleblowing as a critical tool for combating corruption, Article 5 (Section 5) of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC) obligated State Parties to “adopt legislative and other measures to protect informants and witnesses in corruption and related offences, including protection of their identities.” Further, Article 5 (Section 6) obligates State Parties to “adopt measures that ensure citizens report instances of corruption without fear of consequent reprisals.”
This year, in recognizing the role of whistleblowers, the 2024 African Anti-Corruption Day commemorated under the theme “Effective Whistleblowers Protection Mechanism: A Critical Tool in the Fight Against Corruption”.

On this African Anti-Corruption Day, the LACC reminds citizens of their full protection under the Whistleblower Act of 2021, encouraging them to come forward as whistleblowers and provide vital information to the Commission. This protection is essential for strengthening Liberia's criminal justice system in the fight against corruption.
The Education and Prevention Department of the Commission continues to raise public awareness through nationwide anti-corruption campaigns. Citizens are encouraged to share valuable information with the LACC, confident in their protection under the Whistleblower Act and other relevant laws. They are also urged to use the TALKAY APP, a digital platform for anonymously reporting corruption in various counties.

Through collaborative efforts among citizens, civil society organizations, and the Commission, we can cultivate a culture of accountability and transparency for a prosperous Liberia.
