On 31 October 2003, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention Against Corruption and requested that the Secretary-General designate the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as the secretariat for the Convention’s Conference of States Parties (resolution 58/4). The Convention is the only universal legally binding instrument that comprehensively addresses the issue of corruption. It covers five main areas: preventive measures, criminalization and law enforcement, international cooperation, asset recovery, and technical assistance and information exchange.

The Assembly also designated 9 December as International Anti-Corruption Day, to raise awareness of corruption and the role of the UNCAC, as well as parties in combating and preventing corruption. The Convention entered into force in December 2005. At this point, 189 states across the world have joined the convention and committed to its obligations.

The LACC is coordinating the IACD celebration with the GAC, IAA, FIU, LRA as well as other Civil Society Organizations including the Center for Transparency & Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL and Accountability Lab (ILab).
